How to Get That Instant Healthy Clean Feeling

You know the feeling you get after eating something fresh where you just feel so clean and refreshed? You’re a whole different person for having eaten that salad or drinking that kale smoothie or tasting the ginger tea sample. I’m not the only one who gets this, right?

I’m obsessed with that feeling, and when it comes to staying on track with my vegan goals (aka- not giving in to dairy, which honestly is still a struggle for me sometimes!! More on that in another post, but for now, let’s talk about re-starting that clean feelings).

1 | Green smoothies

Look, it’s the easiest way okay! This is my go-to for starting the day off right. Bolthouse Farms has a juice I absolutely love for it if you don’t want to make your own smoothie. Otherwise a simple smoothie you can make includes 2 cups of almond milk, 1 ripe banana, a little bit of fresh ginger (however strong you like it! I’m good with just a couple thin slivers), 4-6 leaves of kale.

The Bolthouse Farms Green Goodness juice is about $5 in my area, and I tend to buy the ingredients for my own smoothie in bulk so it comes out super affordable for me to have one every day no matter which way I decide to drink up.

2 | Do a sun-salutation, and focus on those deep breaths!

I know this isn’t food, but seriously what feels more cleansing than some deep breaths and movement? I’d stretch this into 3 sun salutations rather than just one, but you can do whatever feels good. Here’s a video to walk you through the steps. They are super simple and easy to do. It’s more about the breath than about getting any pose perfect. Just breathe and let your body move. Getting your circulation going, moving toxins and lymph, there are so many benefits to this little exercise and it doesn’t cost you a penny to do!

3 | Herbal Tea

First though, just remember to do your research and make sure you’re not consuming any herbs that might interfere with your medications or that could negatively impact your health if you are diabetic or have heart conditions. If you’re uncertain, reach out to your doctor or pharmacist before starting something new. That said, most mainstream herbal teas steeped 5-10 minutes are probably safe. My favorites for feeling clean and refreshed tend to be nettle, lavender, just a plain green tea, or a homemade peach tea. I love the recipe for peach tea in the Thug Kitchen cookbook. You can usually find boxed teas for less than $6 for an entire box- or you can stop into a bulk herb store and buy the herbs you want for even lower prices. Just make sure you have a tea ball or something to steep the herbs in!

Here’s one of my favorites for feeling nourished and healthy- and motivated to keep the healthy curve going.

4 | Eat some badass burritos

This one is my favorite. If you have a minute to make them, never underestimate the power of a good burrito! To really feel good in my body after a burrito, I go for a corn tortilla or a small flour one- nothing too heavy, and then I tend to do just a couple spoonfulls of pinto or black beans, and smother it in avocado and lime, freshly diced tomatoes, lettuce, and a little hot sauce. The combination of the fresh veggies, lime juice, and hint of spice feel amazing in my body. Play with this and pay attention to what makes your body feel good vs what might make you feel more heavy and bloated. This is my go-to lunch, especially if I’m trying to get back on the vegan train after slipping up over a weekend!

5 | Step outside and take a deep breath

I know this could have been something cooler like those magic little $3 ginger or turmeric shots at Whole Foods, but honestly sometimes the answer is just simple and doesn’t cost a penny. Just step outside your door- even if it’s raining or snowing. Our bodies love to feel the seasons around us. Bundle up if you need to, and if it’s not too cold I dare you to even let the rain pour down on your head. Just step outside, close the door behind you, and settle into the space- even if you’re still on concrete surrounded by the hustle and concrete all of a city around you. Look up at the sky, look out at a tree or at the grass. Notice if there are birds or squirrels. Take a big deep breath, and exhale completely. I can never just do this once, I always want more!

You deserve to feel good! Don’t stop with just an instant fix, use these tips as fuel to keep your lifestyle fresh and healthy.

Feeling fresh and clean in our body is usually just a need to reconnect with the physical world around us and the way it feels to exist as we are, at least in my experience. Do something to get closer to the earth. Thank her for a beautiful green lunch or for a nutrient dense and soothing cup of herbal tea, or for a fresh energizing smoothie with some ginger spice! Breathe in the air and remember that the world came through so very much to get to this moment in time where you exist and get to breathe and eat and live your radiant life. What’s more cleansing than knowing you’re alive on such a beautiful planet?
